In the rapidly evolving world of airline training, the use of virtual reality (VR) is gaining significant traction. Many training departments are already leveraging VR as a supplementary tool to enhance their current training pathways. While regulatory approval is not currently required to incorporate VR into training courses, exciting changes are on the horizon. Within the next two years, the FAA and EASA are likely to release additional regulatory approvals, which would allow VR devices to serve as standalone, approved training tools.
Why VR makes sense for airline training programs
Integrating VR into training programs offers numerous benefits, including immersive learning experiences, increased retention rates, and enhanced engagement for trainees. VR can simulate real-world scenarios in a controlled environment, allowing trainees to practice and hone their skills without the risks associated with real-life training. And, while integrating VR into an existing training footprint may seem daunting, the process can be streamlined, ultimately providing airlines with a robust, customized solution for increasing training effectiveness with little to no disruption of current operations.
The ability to capture data from the headset also provides numerous benefits. Pilots and training departments can not only view basic completion data but also feedback on the steps pilots carried out incorrectly, eye tracking data to analyze where the pilot was looking, and other important performance metrics. This access to data provides real-time performance feedback to the pilot and, with AI integration, an individual’s training can be automatically customized to address areas where improvement is needed.
